Born Abbey Muzenda and famously known as Miss Abby is an Motswana Afro pop mixed with R&B musician. She started her career in early 2019 and is an amazing vocalist. Her love of music is evident in her eyes and conternance when she talks about it. There's just an incadescent joy that just radiates from her.
I questioned her about the genre of music and why she chose this specific one " I want to be in a league of my own. To create a sound that is so Afro centric but still that is relatable to everyone across the globe. My music needs to be a reflection and extension of who I am as a person and that is proudly African." We discussed how it has been penetrating the industry and the challenges that she has faced in doing so. The lack of support from both local governments and corporations is a big stumbling block for most Batswana artist. We as Batswana fail to see and recognize the talent that's in our own backyard hence not giving them the platform and conjucive environment to grow. " Our governments and local corporations are more willing to pay an exorbitant amount of money to get South African artists to come play shows than to allow local artists to showcase their own work". The plight of musicians in this pandemic was one of the major hurdles she's had to face as well. With concerts and social gatherings having being canceled, musicians and artists in general, have had to look for other streams of income. " After struggling to come up with ways of creating another stream of income, someone encouraged me to start printing merchandise for Miss Abby. At first the idea seemed ludacris and a bit farfetched and I doubted if it would ever work but at this point I knew I just had to try. I started off with t-shirts then from t-shirts to hoodies and sweat pants. This is where the idea of Miss Abby clothing was birthed. My goal is to start selling clothing with my own brand name which I'm still trying to figure out. I want a name that straight off the bat screams AFRICAN."
We then delved into her music and where she sees it going. She currently has 3 singles out that are available for streaming on all major music platforms . Her first single" Going on Vacation " which was a radio hit introduced her to most of her fans as the girl with the amazing pop/ R&B vocals. I asked her about her writing process and what inspires her." Well basically I listen to the beat or music my producer has for me. This then guides me to what type of song will best suit the beat. After that I share it with my manager and producer who then helps with the finishing touches. With regards to what inspires me, I'd say life as a whole. Everything about it. Both the good and the bad ".
Personally I believe that we are still yet to see greater things from this young lady who does not shy away from her African identity, but stands proud in it and is ready to introduce the world to her art. My last question to her was when we should be expecting her album. To this she just laughed and smiled and said anytime soon. So ladies and gentlemen be on the look out for new and exciting music from Miss Abby.
